Phillips, like Stanford, was concerned first and foremost with limiting racial pressures while maintaining academic integrity; in the interest of preserving the college's physical safety in a "bomb-crazy" city, he delayed integration until 1965. He also aided BSC immensely by helping secure a $2 million grant from the Ford Foundation.
